I was introduced to the world of data centres on Friday, which was fun. I went home after school and got the bus straight into town, then the train to Maidenhead.
I was weird actually, I was sure I was going to get lost at the station or get on the wrong train or something, but I was fine. I got on the right train – a later one that I had hoped to catch because I missed the ideal one by a minute due to a late bus – and Toby met me at Maidenhead station, although I could have sworn I got lost there because there were TWO WAY OUTS! How silly is that!?
So I met him there and we walked back to his office in time to see his boss, Tim, leave to get wire cutters. It was cool really, I got to meet people! Well, people being Tim and his girlfriend, Caitlin. They were really nice, and the office was kind of cool.. The 30 bottles of Pepsi in one corner and the many many empty cardboard boxes in the other were rather funny. But yeah, I worked on my new website for a bit and then we went off to get KFC before we went to the old datacentre to collect the kit. Tim had only managed to get access to that place for two people so I was sitting in the car with the server listening to Xfm. That was okay.. I was cold though..
Then when they got back we went off to the new place. I went in with them that time, almost failing miserably at carrying server rails.. We plonked the stuff by the rack and then got to work, putting in the rails and racking up the servers. It was cool, we racked up the new one that I named Starscream (they’re all named after transformers). It was really loud with all the servers going, but it was really interesting.
We went back to the office for a bit after that to check on everything, and then Tim gave Toby and me a lift back to my house where we watched TV until Dad wanted to take him home. It was a cool thing to do, I actually learnt something!
